Medications That Could Contribute To Erectile Dysfunction

What Are Some Common Medications That Could Cause Erectile Dysfunction?

There are several medications that can cause erectile dysfunction (ED) as a side effect. The most common medications that cause ED are:


Antidepressants: Medications used to treat depression such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and tricyclic antidepressants can cause ED as a side effect. Examples include


  • Fluoxetine (Prozac)
  • Sertraline (Zoloft)
  • Paroxetine (Paxil).


Blood pressure medications: Medications used to treat hypertension such as thiazide diuretics and beta-blockers can cause ED as a side effect. Examples include hydrochlorothiazide, atenolol, and propranolol.


Heartburn medications: A class of medications used to treat GERD called Proton Pump Inhibitors. Examples include:

  • omeprazole (Prilosec, Prilosec OTC, Zegerid)
  • lansoprazole (Prevacid)
  • pantoprazole (Protonix)


However H2 blockers do not cause ED. Examples include:

  • cimetidine (Tagamet)
  • ranitidine (Zantac)
  • nizatidine (Axid)
  • famotidine (Pepsid).


Antihistamines, such as

  • diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
  • chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton).


Antipsychotics, such as

  • chlorpromazine (Thorazine)
  • haloperidol (Haldol).


Hormone therapy for prostate cancer that can cause ED side affects:

Medications such as

  • leuprolide (Lupron)
  • goserelin (Zoladex)


Opioid pain medications that can cause ED:

Medications used to treat pain such as

  • oxycodone (OxyContin)
  • fentanyl (Duragesic)


Recreational drugs: Some recreational drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine can cause ED as a side effect.


It's important to note that this list is not exhaustive and other medications may also cause ED as a side effect. If you are taking medication and experiencing ED, it's important to speak with your doctor about the potential side effects and if there are alternative options available.
