Initial Visit

During this visit you will meet with the physician and discuss your symptoms and history. This thorough evaluation will help the physician determine the appropriateness of the treatment and how effective it will likely be. The physician will also screen you for any nerve disorders or infections in the treatment area to ensure the safety of the procedure.

If you choose to move forward with the therapy, your clinical team will explain the process of the therapy, what to expect, and you will be given the opportunity to ask any questions. Before you leave, your first appointment will typically be scheduled when it is convenient for you.

Therapy Visit

When you arrive, you will be placed in a private treatment room. You will be made comfortable while lying on the exam table. Once therapy begins, your clinician will use an applicator that looks like a wand which transmits sound waves referred to as shockwaves. The wand will be placed on different regions of the penis as it sends shockwaves into the tissue. The pulse waves encourage blood flow by eliminating plaque buildup in the arteries while also promoting tissue rejuvenation.

The therapy causes no pain. You may feel a little discomfort or an awkward sensation from the pulses initially, but this typically resolves within a couple of hours. If you do feel pain at any time, let your clinician know immediately.

It is important to know, shockwave therapy can cause temporary inflammation of the tissues of the penis. Because of this inflammation your body’s natural healing process kicks in and begins to regenerate and repair the cells. If you are receiving treatment for Peyronie’s disease, the shockwave therapy breaks down the scar tissue within the penis that eventually removes the curvature of the penis when aroused.

Following Your Therapy

There is no down time after your treatment. It is sometimes recommended to avoid certain strenuous activities or exercise immediately following your therapy to avoid any unwanted symptoms. If you choose to have intercourse the same day of your treatment, it can cause some mild pain and is recommended you wait 24 hours from the time of your treatment.
